Goonbarrow China Clay Pit

Bugle, Treverbyn, Cornwall, England, UK

A former china clay pit near Bugle, which encompassed a number of smaller china clay works over time.

Workings and mines that were encompassed by the Goonbarrow China Clay Pit include:

  • Old Beam clay works
  • Imperial Goonbarrow
  • East Goonbarrow
  • West Goonbarrow
  • North Goonbarrow
  • Caudledown
  • Cleaves
  • South Caudledown
  • Rock Hill clay works
  • Old Beam Mine (former tin mine)

There are various minerals that have been found at the site over time – obviously, these were likely found as the china clay works dug through mineralised areas, and may not be visible anymore.

Of particular interest to me are the ‘pigs eggs’ from the site, a pseudomorph of kaolinite and muscovite after orthoclase crystals.
