Cabochons are gemstones that have been shaped and polished into a smooth, domed shape with a flat back.
They are typically used in jewellery making – usually in bezel settings. Most often they are used for rings, earrings, necklaces, brooches etc – but we have sold some to furniture makers and even reenactors making modern replicas of ancient historical relics.
They are practical and fairly easy to use – in some cases even glued into pre-made settings.
The rounded shape of cabochons makes them ideal for settings where the focus is on the colour, pattern, or texture of the stone rather than its clarity or brilliance – stones prized for their clarity and brilliance are typically faceted instead.
