Wheal Wrey

Wrey and Ludcott United Mines, St Ive, Cornwall, England

One of several grouped lead and silver mines (Ludcott, North Trelawney, Wrey), which were eventually combined into the ‘Wrey and Ludcott United mines’.

Wheal Wrey opened in 1846 and closed along with the united mines in 1866.

Over the lifetime of the mine, it produced 5435 tons of lead ore and over a hundred thousand ounces of silver.

It also produced some nice specimens of calcite and pyrite. It’s reasonable to say that some specimens must have been collected from spoil heaps around the site, as I have seen a fair few nice quality unweathered pieces with labels no older than the 70s.
