Phoenix United Mine

Minions, Linkinhorne, Cornwall, England, UK

The Phoenix United Mine is a former copper and tin mine in Cornwall.

Mining on this site first commenced in 1836 as Cornwall Great United Mines. This was a combination of Clanacombe mine, Stowes mine, and Wheal Prosper mine.

It reopened in around 1844 as Phoenix Mine/Wheal Phoenix; in 1875 the West Pheonix mine was included in the set, after which it was worked as ‘Phoenix United’.

It is possible that antique specimens from before this could have any of these names.

The site includes various smaller workings, including:

  • Clanacombe
  • North Phoenix
  • Stowes
  • South Phoenix
  • West Phoenix Mine
  • West Sharp Tor
  • Wheal Phoenix
  • Wheal Prosper
  • Withybrook Mine / Witheybrook Mine

Many of the dumps and buildings on the surface were removed at closure, but there is still some evidence of mining remaining on the site.

Mindat lists 54 minerals from the site, including one for which it is the type locality – chalcosiderite.

The site is now a SSSI; heavy metals from the mining have created an unusual environment in which certain types of mosses and lichens can fluorish.
