Melbur China Clay Pit

Melbur, St Stephen-in-Brannel, Cornwall, England

Melbur China Clay Pit (sometimes abbreviated to Melbur CCP) is an open pit mine for kaolin clay and clay.

It is best known amongst mineral collectors for pseudomorphs of kaolinite after orthoclase.

Melbur pit is a huge site, and as far as I can tell it is currently operated by Goonvean Aggregates. The site is private property and it is unlikely collecting or visiting will be permitted.

Most of the specimens found online were collected by mineral collectors in the 1970s and 1980s, when far more sites were available – not that I’m bitter, honest…
