Fowey Consols

Tywardreath and Par, Cornwall, England, UK

Fowey Consols is a group of combined copper workings, quite near St Austell.

The mine is a combination of several small workings, including:

  • Wheal Chance
  • Wheal Fortune
  • Wheal Treasure
  • Lanescot Mine

The three Wheals were originally worked from 1813 to 1819. In 1822 they were purchased and combined as Fowey consols. In 1836, Lanescot Mine was added to the combined mine.

It was eventually closed in 1867.

Mindat lists nearly forty mineral species from the site, including two for which it is the type locality – langite and rhabdophane-Ce.

The mine is popular amongst micro mineral collectors, producing fine micros of Cuprite, chalcotrichite, bismuthinite, fluorapatite, siderite, goethite, and more.

There has been a book written on the mine and I suspect this will be the most detailed available source.
