Great Longstone China Clay Pit

Longstone Downs, St Mewan, Cornwall, England, UK

Large china clay pit worked for kaolin clays.

I can’t find too much information about this site; it appears to still be active and operating by Imerys.

The site occasionally produced(s?) specimens of opal and quartz, including amethyst. I do not know if this was a one time thing or pockets of mineralisation are common.

I did get a few older specimens of smoky quartz labelled as being from this location – they were exceptional.
