West Caradon Mine

Crow’s Nest, St Cleer, Cornwall, England, UK

A historic copper mine worked since at least 1837.

The site includes several sublocalities, which can get a little confusing due to the names used – and the entire site will be referred to as “West Caradon Mine” until I find a clearer description.

Shafts and other names may include:

  • Couch’s shaft
  • Elliot’s Shaft
  • Footway
  • Fox’s shaft
  • Hallets Shaft
  • Marina’s Shaft
  • New West Caradon Mine
  • Rickard’s Shaft

I believe West Caradon mine was formed in 1837, and New West Caradon mine was a new venture started in 1880, which was worked alongside the site.

Both were abandoned by 1885.

Very little remains of the site on the surface, except for several large dump sites.
