Arizona is, of course, world famous for its geology. The Colorado River, Grand Canyon, and the Barringer meteorite crater are known worldwide, and bring in many visitors to the state.

Mining is a huge part of the economy of Arizona, with copper production bringing in nearly 60% of the total US production of the metal.

Sand, gravels, stone, copper, gold, silver, and molybdenum form a large portion of Arizonas mining wealth. Gemstones and mineral specimens too – turquoise and other copper minerals are well known from the state.

The state gemstone of Arizona is Turquoise, a blue-green copper gemstone used in Native American jewellery for many years. Arizona produces a large amount of high quality turquoise, which is sold worldwide for jewellery making.

The state mineral is actually quite recent – only added in 2017. It is Wulfenite, a lead molybdate mineral. Some of the best quality Wulfenite specimens in the world come from Red Cloud Mine in Arizona.

The state fossil of Arizona is, of course, petrified wood, a fossil material that Arizona is famous for. Specifically, the state fossil is the fossilised wood of Araucarioxylon arizonicum, a species which became much of the famous Arizona petrified wood.

Arizona is the type locality for over 100 minerals, primarily the sorts of uncommon species that are of interest to systematic mineral collectors.

The state produces excellent specimens of various minerals including fine ajoite, cerussite, chrysocolla, cuprite and native copper, dioptase, hemimorphite, kinoite, malachite, rosasite, vanadinite, and wulfenite.
