Alaska

This page collects together all the minerals we have from the state of Alaska, as well as providing a little information on the geology and mineralogy of the state at the bottom of the page.

I can’t hope to cover the entire geological or mineralogical history of a state on this simple page.

The state gemstone of Alaska is jade, most of which is found on the Seward Peninsula; the majority of the jade found here is nephrite.

The state fossil of Alaska is the Woolly Mammoth, which roamed Alaska until around 12,000 years ago. Many fine examples of Mammoth teeth can be found in Alaska, and skin, hair, and even complete mammoths can sometimes be found from melting Alaskan permafrost.

Alaskas state mineral is gold, of which the state produces a large amount of the USA’s total yearly production. Between 1880 and 2018, the state produced over 1.5 million kilograms of gold.

Alaska hosts a fairly significant share of the worlds mineral resources, and has mines working for gold, silver, zinc, lead, and coal. It also has reasonable deposits of molybdenum, cobalt, graphite, copper, barite, and rare earth elements, which could potentially be extracted.

Alaska is the type locality for seven minerals, although none are especially widely recognised species; I suspect they will only be of interest to systematic mineral collectors – aluminocopiapite, bowieite, gillespite, hulsite, pseudomertieite, and schoenfliesite.
