Saccocoma crinoid fossils from the Solnhofen Limestone in Germany
Saccocoma was a free floating Crinoid, also known as a 'pelagic Crinoid'.
Most Crinoids anchored themselves to the sea bed with a stem and holdfast, leading to the very common crinoid stem fossils found over much of the UK.
Free floating Crinoids simply floated around instead!
Saccocoma had almost feathery arms, with branches coming off them to increase the surface area for feeding.
These specimens are from the Jurassic Solnhofen Limestone in Germany. Solnhofen is a famous Lagerstätte with the ideal conditions to create exceptional preservations of fossils, including Archaeopteryx.
