Baltic Amber with Insects

Gorgeous pieces of Baltic Amber with insect inclusions - flies, mosquitoes, and spiders.

These are gorgeous pieces with at least one visible insect.

I personally find Amber fascinating. I bought a small USB microscope capable of really good magnification; you can see some of the photos I've taken of insects with it.

The Amber found in the Baltic sea region is thought to date from the Eocene in age - although the exact age is somewhat argued upon in the scientific community - it is probably best to simply state that it is 'around 40 million years old'.

Most of the insects in this Amber will be at least visible by eye, but 10x or higher magnification is recommended.

  • #1 - 19.5x12.5x5.9MM - at least two insects visible. One is quite close to the surface and some good photographs were possible.
  • #2 - 11.8x10.3x6.2MM - a single insect, visible from both sides.
  • #3 - 18x12.5x7.7MM - a single insect unfortunately largely obscured from view by clouding in the amber.
  • #4 - 16.9x13.6x9.3MM - a single insect in a slightly cloudy piece of amber.
  • #5 - 16x11.7x6.6MM - a reasonably well preserved insect, close to the surface; good photographs were possible.
  • #6 - 17.8x12x8.2MM - a very messed up piece of amber with a small mass of legs visible.
  • #7 - 11.7x5.4x5.1MM - a very small fragment of amber with two visible insects, normally I'd polish something like this but its just too small.
  • #8 -
  • #9 - 21.2x13.4x4.3MM - a single insect, quite dark but well preserved by the looks.
  • #10 - 18x11.3x4.3MM - one and a bit insects - one is very well preserved, the other is a mess of legs. The complete creature has detailed legs, eyes, wings, and antennae.
  • #11 - 18.4x10.3x8.4MM - one, possibly two insects - poor preservation; possibly a spider.
  • #12 - 11.3x8.6x4.5MM - a single insect and a selection of random insect legs. Largely hidden from view but well preserved, this is probably a candidate for being ground down further.
  • #13 - 14.5x9.4x6.7MM - a single insect in a very clear piece of amber.
  • #14 - 12.3x10.3x6.1MM - a single insect of which I was able to take a really rather nice photo.
  • #15 - 16.5x14x8.4MM - single insect with nice visible wings.
  • #16 - 14.2x10.6x8.3MM - a single fragmented insect, antenna were nicely visible.
  • #17 - 22.5x13.9x5.9MM - a single well preserved insect, close to the surface.
  • #18 - 21.1x9.5x6MM - at least two insects, at least one of which looks to be very well preserved.
  • #19 - 18.9x8.5x5.4MM - an indistinct mass with a leg or two, difficult to view as it is deep in the amber.
  • #20 - 13.1x9.8x5.4MM - a single insect largely covered with the white bubbles associated with decomposition.
  • #21 - 16.1x15.1x8.7MM - a single nicely preserved insect, quite close to the surface.
  • #22 - 13.5x12.6x5.9MM - a piece with lots of debris or detritus and at least one reasonably well preserved insect.
  • #23 - 19.5x13.3x7.5MM - at least one reasonably preserved insect.
  • #24 - 15x9.2x6.6MM - a single well preserved insect in clear amber, of which decent photos can be taken.
  • #25 - 16x10.3x6.2MM - a messed up piece of amber with a single insect, but look at the preservation on that segmented tail!
  • #26 - 21.4x12.4x8.7MM - a single insect in mostly clear amber.
  • #27 - 15x9.3x5.6MM - two small, unusual insects, possibly larvae or nymphs. They remind me of mosquito larvae I've seen in standing water.
  • #28 - 18.9x14.1x4.9MM - a single reasonably well preserved insect with great antennae.
  • #29 - 13.7x11x6.6MM - a single insect partially obscured by decomp bubbles.
  • #30 - 16.2x13.4x5.5MM - two insects, possibly trapped in an eternal battle.
  • #31 - 21.3x13.3x5.7MM - a single insect unfortunately partially obscured by fractures in the amber.
  • #32 - 14.6x10.4x6.4MM - a nice piece of clear amber with a single insect and assorted detritus.
  • #33 - 11.6x7.8x7.5MM - a small piece with a mostly obscured insect.
  • #34 - 16.9x8.5x5.5MM - a single insect, reasonably close to the surface.
  • #35 - 14.4x9x5.5MM - a single well preserved insect
  • #36 - 14.5x11.2x7.1MM - a single insect and a possible moult or mould of another which may have escaped or been eaten before the resin solidified.
  • #37 - 22x13.3x4.6MM - an oddball, this - not really sure what I'm looking at, but it seems to have eight legs - so possibly a spider.
  • #38 -
  • #39 - 12x10.3x5.6MM - a single insect largely covered with the white bubbles associated with decomposition.
  • #40 - 28.7x9x5.1MM -  a small 'stalactite-like' piece with at least two insects visible.

If requested in the 'order notes' section I can draw a circle around the insect on the surface of the Amber - this can be removed with solvents like acetone or nail polish remover but makes it easier to find the insect.
