The state is the type locality for a very large number (over 150!) of mineral species, including many rare or unusual minerals that are primarily of interest to systematic and advanced mineral collectors.

California is world-famous for its gem and mineral localities, most notably as the only significant source of the gemstone benitoite, which occurs in association with natrolite and neptunite.

Benitoite is the state gemstone of California, designated in 1985. Native gold is recognized as the state mineral, while serpentinite is designated as the state rock.

California has also produced exceptional specimens of quartz, tourmaline, kunzite, morganite, and gold, with notable collecting areas throughout the Sierra Nevada, Coast Ranges, Mojave Desert, and southern pegmatite districts.

California exploits a wide range of mineral resources, including gold, boron (borax), rare earth minerals, lithium, clays, construction aggregates, and gemstones.

Lithium resources associated with geothermal brines are likely to become even more important as demand increases for battery technology and renewable energy storage.
