Monterey formation

The Monterey formation is a Miocene era formation deposited between 5 and 17 million years ago, which is the source for most of Californias known oil reserves.

Alongside oil, the formation is exploited for numerous resources including diatomite.
The formation preserves a large amount of primarily marine fossils, including sharks and bony fish, birds, reptiles, mammals (primarily whales and porpoises) and a range of creatures similar to dugongs, sea cows, and seals. Crab fossils are also found in the formation.
