Susanna Mine

Leadhills, South Lanarkshire, Scotland, UK

An abandoned lead mine worked between around the 16th century and 1869.

The mine is known for quality specimens, particularly of lead and copper minerals.

Mindat lists 35 minerals from the site, including six for which it is the type locality – chenite, lanarkite, leadhillite, macphersonite, scotlandite, and susannite.

The Leadhills Estate which owns the site has some history on the mine and the area around it.

They refer to a large spoil heap called Lady Manners’ Scar and provide a history of the site, suggesting it was worked from the 16th century until 1869.

There is still some access to the open cast, the mine shafts, water wheel pits, etc. Whether or not this access is public I don’t know – it would be worth contacting the Leadhills Estate for this info.
