Silver Gill

Roughton Gill, Caldbeck, Allerdale, Cumbria, England, UK

Silver Gill is one of the many mines on the Roughton Gill. This one works a Cu-Pb-Zn vein.

Mindat lists 43 minerals from the site, including one for which it is the type locality – redgillite.

Kinda seems like that one would have been discovered at the nearby ‘Red Gill Mine’, but what do I know? 🙂

The earliest mention of mining at Silver Gill is 1331, an order issued by Edward III.

Historic England has an archaeological survey of two combined mines – Roughton Gill Mine and Silver Gill Mine. Well worth a read if you are especially interested in this site.
