Red Gill Mine

Red Gill Mine is one of the many small mines in Caldbeck Fells which were worked for lead and copper ores.

The mine has been worked since the 18th century, but was mostly collected from in the 19th; as well as the dumps – which have been collected from ever since. Whether or not any dumps still exists on the site I’m afraid I don’t know.

Mindat lists around fifty minerals from the site including specimens of the reasonably rare Caledonite, Leadhillite and Linarite. It is the type locality for redgillite.
