Cave-in-Rock
Hardin County, Illinois, USA
Cave-in-Rock is a state park and town in Hardin County, all named, rather unsurprisingly, after a cave in a rock.
The area is known for phenomenal purple Fluorites, some of the best in the world.
There were many mines around the area, primarily exploiting galena and fluorspar. The best known mines in the area for mineral specimens were the Minerva mine, the Denton mine, and the Anna Belle Lee mine, all of which are now closed.
Cave-in-Rock Fluorite is considered some of the most desirable Fluorite by collectors, and typically commands a high price. It is often purple, yellow, or bi-colour and often contains inclusions of hydrocarbons, adding to its fluorescence.
