What is a Necklace?
A necklace is a piece of jewellery that people wear around their neck. It can be made from many things like metal, beads, stones, shells, or even fabric.
A brief history of necklaces
Necklaces have been worn for centuries, with archaeological specimens found from ancient peoples.
The oldest necklace I could find was an archaeological piece from around 150k years ago, found in Morocco. It was made out of snail shells and had at least 33 ‘beads’.
We don’t know whether the beads were on a string or attached to clothing, though.
There are numerous Roman and Egyptian necklaces, and even frescoes and contemporary art of people wearing them, so we know necklaces have been worn for thousands of years.
