Tourmaline and Cassiterite from Whitestone Quarry, Bovey Tracey, Teignbridge, Devon, UK

Nice little specimen of British Tourmaline, from an extremely uncommon locale in Devon.

It's fair to say I'll never get another piece of this... as...

I've had to do a little bit of detective work on this one!

It comes with two labels; one from the original collector and one from a previous owner. Both list the locale as 'Whitstone Quarry', one stating 'Bovey Tracey'.

However, I was able to find a PDF file with a single line on the DevonRigs site:

"Whitstone Quarry Bovey Tracey SX815792 Exposures of contact between Dartmoor Granite and shaly hornfels (Combe shale) SX87NW1"

The grid reference led me to 50.60046 -3.67578, on the grounds of "Whitestone Farm", just north of Bovey Tracey. The National Library of Scotlands old maps service finally helped me track it down - Whitestone Quarry.

I do not know whether anything remains of the quarry now. I have now made a mindat page for the quarry.
