Polished Dactylioceras Ammonites
Polished Dactylioceras Ammonites from the area around Whitby, UK.
These have been saw cut to give them a direct cut through the surface of the ammonite (and in some cases, they have had a base cut flat too).
Cutting through the centre shows off the whorl structure of the Ammonite, and sometimes shows creatures which have later used its shell for shelter.
The ammonites are often (but not always) fluorescent under UV light due to Calcite replacement of the fossils, although some are pyrite replaced. I've added a photo of a piece being highlighted with a UV torch for an idea of how some may look.
