Blue John Mineral Specimens

Blue John is a unique form of Fluorite from the Derbyshire area, particularly the area around Castleton.

It is an extremely rare form of Fluorite and is only getting rarer - a very small amount comes to the market every year.

It is usually purple, sometimes purple and yellow - and often exhibits good cubic crystals.

Our current stock includes:

  • #1 - 155x90x34.5MM - a 646 gram specimen with one fully polished face and a smaller polished face to the rear. Nice purple banding amid larger areas of whites, greys, and cream tones. Some areas are fluorescent.
  • #2 - 30.2x18.4x13.8MM - a yellowy-orange piece with a single band of purple.
  • #3 - 23.6x16.3x15.2MM - quite a lot of purple and 'clear' sections in here, with some iron staining.
  • #4 - 27.4x13.1x9.3MM - nice one with lots of purple, some iron staining.
  • #5 - 25x12.7x8.4MM - primarily a clear piece with a single purple band.
  • #6 - 245x128x65MM - a very large piece weighing 2.75KG. The matrix rock is fossiliferous, and the top face is covered in a large number of purple Fluorite crystals. It has a largely flat base and will make an excellent cabinet piece.
  • #7 - 21.3x19.9x9.1MM - primarily a clear piece with a single purple band.
  • #8 - 15x13x8.5MM - quite a nice piece, plenty of clear/white and purple areas.
  • #9 - 25x22x12.6MM - a clear/white and purple piece with lots of iron staining.
  • #10 - 18x13.6x7.6MM - a very dark purple piece, which is best viewed with a backlight.

  • Several low quality small specimens sold as random picks. Very good budget option for collectors who want their first piece of Blue John.

Frequently asked questions and delivery information

How do we grade stones?

There is no overall universal grading system for the majority of our products. As such, the grades we use are internal only. They simply refer to higher and lower qualities, but they may be entirely different grades to other websites. C grade pieces are of lower quality than B grade, which is lower than A grade.

How does our ordering and delivery process work?

You place an order via the website. When it’s been picked and packed, your order will be marked as completed and dropped off at our local post office. We have an account with the post office called a “Drop and Go” account, which allows the post office staff to process our parcels when they have free time, rather than me queuing up and delaying everyone else.

I get tracking information etc online when this has been completed. I typically do not send tracking information to customers unless they request it – but if you’ve requested tracked postage, it has been sent tracked! If you have any worries or concerns about your parcel being delayed please feel free to get in touch and I’ll send the tracking info over! We also get delivery confirmations for parcels over 25MM thick by default.

How do international orders work?

After Brexit, with the UK leaving the European Union, certain things have changed with regards to international orders. European Union customers will now likely be liable to pay the same amount of import VAT as any other international customers. You will be responsible for any customs and import fees.

I’d like to return my order for a refund.

No problem at all – just get in touch and we’ll arrange it. You can read our full returns policy here.

What payment methods do you accept?

I can accept Paypal, Stripe, cheque, and direct bank transfers. Paypal and Stripe will both allow you to pay with credit and debit cards.
