Pink Amethyst specimens
Nice display pieces of pink Amethyst, from the El Choique mine, Patagonia, Argentina. These are from a relatively new find, and were only introduced to the market in 2017.
The naming of this material is always going to be controversial. Amethyst is, and always has been purple, so by this definition this material cannot be 'Amethyst'. However, the colouration of Amethyst is caused by specific mineral inclusions and irradiation - purple is caused by Iron (Fe) atoms and irradiation, and it seems that this may somehow be caused by the same process (Ana L. Rainoldi, George R. Rossman, Lucas Di Martino, AndrÉs Oteiza)
However, perhaps the safest option is to refer to it as 'pink Quartz' or 'iron included Quartz'. It is distinct from Rose Quartz, which gains its colour in a different method, owing to fibrous aligned inclusions.
Our current stock includes a range of small geode halves/fragments, most of which are between 30-50MM approximately wide.
