Illinois is best known among collectors for world class specimens of fluorite, calcite, sphalerite, galena, barite, and quartz have been produced from historic mining districts, especially in Hardin County and the Illinois-Kentucky Fluorspar District.

Fluorite is the state mineral of Illinois, officially designated in 1965. Native gold is recognized as the state mineral of commerce, while coal has played a historically significant role in the state’s economic development.

Illinois has produced some of the finest fluorite specimens ever found, ranging from deeply coloured purple and blue cubes to complex, multi-stage crystal associations with calcite and sphalerite.

By far my favourite minerals from the state are the quality fluorites from the Cave-In-Rock area and other areas of Hardin County. I would highly recommend any quality collection own a piece from the area.

Illinois exploits a wide range of mineral and industrial resources including fluorite, limestone, dolomite, silica sand, clay, coal, oil, and natural gas. These resources have been critical to both regional industry and national infrastructure.
