Old Sandbed Mine

Caldbeck, Allerdale, Cumbria, England, UK

Historic lead mine with considerable dumps on the Caldbeck fell.

Mindat lists 81 minerals from the site, including a lot of copper, lead, and zinc minerals.

The dump sites are quite considerable, but I have no idea whether any collecting is allowed at the site.

The site does produce some nice micro minerals – mimetite, linarite, malachite, etc.

I’d love to know where the name for this mine comes from – if anyone knows, please send me an email! ‘Old Sandbed’ – does it refer to a sandy area of the Caldbeck fell, or is there a ‘New Sandbed’?
