Mindat lists 59 mineral species from La Rioja.

The Iberian system of mountains runs through part of La Rioja, with the highest peak in the province being Monte San Lorenzo.

La Rioja is also internationally famous for its dinosaur tracksites, which form one of the most important fossil resources in Spain and add significant geological and educational value to the region.. These include the Enciso dinosaur route, and the Cornago tracksites, particularly Los Cayos.

I have to say, though – the reason most people in the mineral collecting field will have heard of La Rioja is a single mineral – Pyrite.

The Pyrite from La Rioja is, simply, world class – some of the finest specimens in the world are found here, with many perfect cubic, often intergrown crystals both on and off marl.

The locales around Navajún and Ambas Aguas produce many of the quality pyrite cubes you can buy online, which people genuinely struggle to believe are real.
