Wheal Sparnon

Redruth, Cornwall, England

Wheal Sparnon was a tin, cobalt, and copper mine under Redruth town, it is now completely closed.

Specimens from this locale are quite uncommon, in fact, even photographs of them are difficult to find.

Wheal Sparnon is described as an ‘ancient working’ but no opening date could be found during my brief research.

Cobalt from this location was used in the production of Spode blueware, dating the mine to at least 1816.

It appears Wheal Sparnon closed in 1827 – it was later included in with the Pednandrea sett, which was opened again between 1854 and 1891.
