Old Gang Mines

Reeth, Fremington and Healaugh, Richmondshire, North Yorkshire, UK

Series of ancient lead mines, also known as the AD Mines.

Showing the single result

Minerals from the site include some fairly common lead minerals we’d expect, including cerussite, hemimorphite, pyromorphite.

Old Gang included several smaller mines and levels, including:

  • Ash Pot Gutter
  • Brandybottle Mine
  • Fincher Gill
  • Forefield Rake
  • Friarfold Rake
  • Hard Level
  • North Rake

I was not able to find any reliable dates for the periods this site was worked.

The NMRS writeup of the site states that the mill on the site had closed by 1913, but the mine was selling its ore to another company.

Buddle Pit states that the Brandy Bottle Mine was worked between 1679 and 1867, with the broader ‘Old Gang Mine’ worked between 1811 and 1914.

The site is a scheduled monument, as the smelt mill is considered to be one of the best preserved lead smelt mills in the North Pennines. The Historic England writeup for the site does give some good information on the archaeology of the site.
