Great Rock Mine

Hennock, Teignbridge, Devon, England, UK

A former iron ore mine producing micaceous Hematite.

Showing the single result

The ore from this mine was known as ‘shining ore’ for its quality, with an unusual texture caused by the micaceous nature of the ore.

It was mined heavily during WW2 for battleship paint, producing a rust proof grey paint.

The mine was eventually closed around 1969 – it is currently barred off and reported to be very unsafe.
