Turritella Agate Cabochons

These are freeform Turritella Agate cabochons, cut from a contrasting fossiliferous stone. It is worth pointing out, however - the name Turritella Agate is completely incorrect!

The shells are not of the marine Turritella genus but are actually Elemia.

The material is also not technically an Agate, as it is not banded. Arguably a more correct trade name would be Elemia chalcedony or Elemia agate, but good luck getting that to catch on.

The fossilised gastropods (snails) are Elemia tenera, and come from the Green River Formation of Wyoming, making them around 42-53 million years old.

This material is prized due to its pleasing contrast.

Our freeform cabochons are sold singly as they are simply unique!
