Goethite from the Restormel Royal Iron Mine, Lostwithiel, Cornwall (formerly Trinity Mine)

Specimens of Goethite from the long-closed Restormel Royal Iron Mine, closed in 1883.

This specimen will have been collected in the 70s or 80s from spoil heaps, and the majority of the site seems to now private farmland - although it does appear cavers sometimes still access the main mine.

Our current stock includes:

  • #1 - 85.6x75.2x45.2MM - a roughly fist sized piece weighing 417 grams. Features radiating and botryoidal Goethite crystals. The specimen comes with labels from two former owners, the earliest dated 1974.
  • #2 - 101.3x67.3x55.4MM - fist sized piece weighing 370 grams approx. Botryoidal Goethite over a quartz rich matrix. The fractured sides of the crystals show the black-brown-gold radiating crystals referred to sometimes as 'wood iron'.
