The state is the type locality for sixteen mineral species, most of which are uncommon or rare species typically only of interest to systematic mineral collectors.
The Crater of Diamonds State Park produces colourless, grey, yellow and brown diamonds, and can be visited by the public for diamond fossicking.
Diamonds are the state gemstone of Arkansas, as of 1967 – in an act which also named quartz as the state mineral and bauxite as the state rock.
My personal favourite minerals from the state are the Wavellites from Dug Hill and Mauldin Mountain, but the quality Quartz found at Mount Ida is a close second – often gemmy and clear.
Arkansas exploits deposits of bauxite, bromine, lithium, novaculite, clays, sands, and gravels, as well as titanium and gemstones – including pearls. It is likely over time that the lithium deposits of the state will become more and more important, as the material becomes more important for battery manufacture and modern technology.
