Cannington Park Quarry

Cannington, Sedgemoor, Somerset, England, UK

Cannington Park Quarry is a former limestone quarry which has produced a range of mineral specimens.

Cannington Park Quarry is not just known for minerals, though. Quarry blasting in the early 60s opened up a chamber, known as “Cannington Park Quarry Cave” which was explored by archaeologists.

Bones found in the cave were determined to be human, alongside red deer, badger, and horse – they are possibly from a Roman cemetery which was above one side of the quarry and dislodged by blasting – but may have been deliberately buried in the cave system, so may be considerably older – possibly mesolithic.
