Millclose Mine

South Darley, Derbyshire Dales District, Derbyshire, England, UK

Millclose Mine is a former lead mine worked between around 1850 and 1940.

It is important to note that two mines may be known as Millclose Mine, and are sometimes called ‘Old’ and ‘New’ – see the bottom of the page for more.

This page specifically refers to the ‘New’ Millclose Mine.

Old Millclose operated from as early as the sixteenth century until around 1870.

Millclose, or ‘New Millclose’ operated from around 1850 to 1940, when it dug into a large underground water table and was mostly flooded.

The site is highly contaminated by lead and is now covered by trees and a lead battery reprocessing plant; it is likely little remains of the mine.

There is a good writeup on a visit to the site from the 1920s, when it was still active linked below at the PDMHS site.
