Wythburn Mine

St. John’s Castlerigg and Wythburn, Allerdale, Cumbria, England, UK

A historic lead mine, worked between 1839 and 1881.

The site may also be known as Helvellyn Consols Mine, Helvellyn Consols Copper Mine, or West Cumberland Consols Mine.

Theres some slight conflict with one website saying this mine exploited three lead veins: Blue Rock Vein, Old Vein, and West Vein.

Another says the mine exploited four lead veins: Blue Vein, Old Vein (North South Vein), Eagle Crag Vein and the East West Vein.

I suppose Eagle Crag Vein lends its name to nearby Eagle Crag Mine.

Much of the site was destroyed when the mine was closed, with the stone reused in the construction of the nearby Thirlmere reservoir.

It seems that some of the remaining areas of the mine were recently destroyed by Storm Desmond in 2015.
