Short Grain

Deer Hills, Caldbeck, Allerdale, Cumbria, England, UK

A small historic lead mine worked between 1870 and 1937.

Mindat lists 16 minerals from the site, mostly lead and copper minerals.

I am not able to find out much information at all about this locale. Unfortunately, my searches are bringing up results for rice…

From satellite imaging the locale appears to be alongside a narrow river or stream valley, even checking old maps I cannot find evidence of any shafts etc – it appears ‘Short Grain’ may refer to one fork of the Hay gill.

There may be no surface evidence of any workings; Mindat has some photos of underground workings but these are quite small.
