Middlecleugh Upper Level

Nenthead, Alston Moor, Eden, Cumbria, England, UK

A small former lead mine working the Middlecleugh-Longcleugh-Capelcleugh vein complex.

The site was primarily worked for lead and zinc, as well as fluorite.

I can unfortunately imagine some confusion with the name here.

Middlecleugh is a vein worked by the Middlecleugh Upper Level mine. The mine is also often known as the Middlecleugh Mine.

The workings contained several shafts, including

  • Atkins Level
  • Coulsons Level
  • Hopes Shaft

It appears the site was later worked for fluorite.

I was able to find the names of several distinct veins:

  • Longcleugh Vein
  • Middlecleugh North Vein
  • Middlecleugh Second Sun Vein
  • Smallcleugh Cross Vein

The entrance to Middlecleugh collapsed in the 1980s, but was refurbished in around 2006 by CATMHS.
