Eagle Crag Mine

Patterdale, Eden, Cumbria, England, UK

A historic lead mine in the Grisedale valley, worked between the 16th century and around 1880.

Mindat lists 21 minerals from the site, primarily lead and zinc minerals.

Little remains of the site, other than some adits driven into the hillsides at various levels. Some are, to an extent, accessible – see the 28dayslater report on the mine below. There are, however, significant spoil heaps remaining on the site.

By far the best writeup of the site is that of the Scottish Geology Trust, and it is well worth a read.

The site was worked for galena, but other minerals are found here too – particularly sphalerite and tetrahedrite. Secondary minerals found here include hemimorphite, aurichalcite, and hydrozincite.
