Wolframite in Quartz, Carrock Mine, Cumbria
£100.00
It is primarily known for wolframite and scheelite, principle ores of Tungsten – hugely important for military uses, in particular the manufacturing of armour.
However, Mindat lists over 80 mineral species from the locale, including apatite, arsenopyrite, bismuthinite, calcite, fluorapatite, fluorite, molybdenite, quartz, rutile, sphalerite, and stibnite – so overall, a rather prolific locale.
The mine was extremely important in both world wars, eventually closing in 1981. The site is now protected, and no collecting is allowed.
