Caspar quarry

Ettringen, Vordereifel, Mayen-Koblenz, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany

An active basalt quarry on the Bellerberg volcano, well known by micromineral collectors.

Mindat lists 242 mineral species from the site, including 17 for which it is the type locality.

Many micro and thumbnail minerals from this site are floating around though – collectors with a particular interest in Eifel minerals can be found all across Europe.

The site was operated between 1962 and 2017 by Alfred Caspar GmbH & Co. KG, before the company was purchased by Terratec-Basalt GmbH.

It does not seem as though any collecting trips are allowed, and I cannot find out whether any dumps are accessible but unfortunately it seems unlikely.

It is possible some specimens may be labelled as “Ettringer Bellberg”, which is the name of the western side of the Bellerberg volcano.

The site may also be known in German as Steinbruch Caspar or Ettringen Basaltlavawerk.
