It was mined until around the first century AD, making some of the Roman cities around extremely wealthy.

It was later mined after the 19th century when mining technologies evolved.

The historical and archaeological aspects here have led to the area being declared a site of cultural interest.

A considerable amount of archaeological evidence from Roman Hispania has been found in the area, and some written accounts of mining in ancient times exist; it was mentioned by Polybius of Megalopolis, 147BC.

The locale covers a great deal of other mines, including some well known Spanish locales – San Valentín mine, Herculano Mine, Teresita Mine, etc.
