Meteorites from Algeria

Algeria is not well known for meteorites, but they can be collected from time to time due to the relative ease of spotting meteorites within the Sahara desert.

Algeria is not widely known for its meteorite finds compared to other regions.

Saharan Algeria has been a source for small, stony meteorite falls. Algeria’s vast, arid deserts have long been a favourable location for meteorite hunting, due to the rarity of vegetation and the way meteorites stand out against the pale sands.

These meteorites are searched for by various nomadic tribes, including the Bedouin and Berber. They are usually chondrites.

Algeria’s meteorites, while not as well known as those from other African countries like Morocco, are significant both in terms of their scientific value and for the collector market. The desert conditions mean that meteorites found here are often well-preserved, and new finds are still being reported occasionally.

Meteorites from Algeria are typically available through specialist dealers or private collections, and their documentation may sometimes be incomplete, as is often the case with meteorites found in remote regions.
