Dry Smale Gill

Roughton Gill, Caldbeck, Allerdale, Cumbria, England, UK

Exposures of lead and copper bearing quartz-dolomite veins.

There were several trials driven during the 19th century for lead and copper ores.

It appears there were several trials, that may be labelled as the following:

  • Dry Smale Gill Low Level
  • Dry Smale Gill Middle Trial
  • Wet Smale Gill Upper Eastern Trial (I would personally label this as from Wet Smale Gill rather than Dry Smale Gill)

There seems to be a fairly large amount of dump sites remaining, which are locally used as a motorbike track according to the Russell Society. It also lacks vegetation, suggesting toxic minerals on the dump sites.

Mindat names 8 mineral species from the site.
