Crowgarth Mine

A part of the West Cumbrian orefields, Crowgarth Mine was first opened in the 1780s.

After first being opened in the 1780s, the mine was closed after a few decades. In 1840, it was reopened and new shafts were dug.
It produced various minerals, of particular interest the hematite ‘kidney ore’. Quartz, calcite, barite and malachite were also found.
