Wolframite from Drakelands Mine, Sparkwell, Devon, UK (also known as Hemerdon Mine, Hemerdon Stock Works)

Drakelands Mine is one of the UK's only tungsten mines, near to Plymouth, Devon.

It produces fine Scorodite, Wolframite, Ferberite, and Cassiterite specimens. Wolframite is, of course, not a true mineral - it is a series between Ferberite and Hubnerite, but is a suitable name where laboratory testing is not possible or economical. It seems most of the material from Drakelands mine is now labelled as ferberite.

This mine has several given names, which are probably historical - including Hemerdon Tungsten Mine, Hemerdon Stock Works, Hemerdon Ball, Hemerdon Bal.

Our current stock includes:

  • #1 - 40.9x27.8x16.1MM - several dark masses on matrix; quite interesting because of an area which appears to be iridescent in certain lights.
  • #2 - 53.8x29.6x18MM - several dark masses on matrix with some mica in places.
