Quartz with Amphibole inclusions
Small specimens of quartz with amphibole inclusions.
Amphibole refers to a mineral supergroup containing numerous minerals, including anthophyllite, edenite, gedrite, holmquistite, hornblende, kaersutite, katophorite, pargasite, richterite, and winchite. The supergroup also contains various mineral series including cummingtonite-grunerite, echermanite-arfvedsonite, glaucophane-riebeckite, and tremolite-actinolite.
Complex as that might be, it can be very difficult to distinguish between amphibole minerals without laboratory testing; as such, the term amphibole is generally used when the identity of the mineral is not known/not analysed.
You may have noticed that several of the minerals listed above (riebeckite, tremolite, actinolite) can be asbestiform, but as inclusions they are contained within quartz and regarded as generally safe.
