This is more accurately known as 'silicified wood', as the wood has been replaced by silicate minerals like Quartz or chalcedony. Quartz group minerals are relatively hard and take a good polish, making petrified wood a good choice for lapidary work.
They come from different locations, most commonly including Indonesia, Madagascar, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
