Mimetite from Dry Gill Mine, Caldbeck Falls, Cumbria, UK
A nice specimen from Dry Gill Mine, Caldbeck Falls, Cumbria. Mimetite forms part of a series with Pyromorphite and it can be difficult to differentiate between Pyromorphite and Mimetite without laboratory access.
It measures 57.3x37.2x26.5MM, with the crystals measuring up to 4MM at most.
Dry Gill mine was a lead and silver mine which was of limited to no commercial significance, but has been regarded as one of the best mineral locations on earth for certain minerals.
"Of little commercial significance, this mine is one of the most famous mineral localities in the world. Lead minerals consisting predominantly of phosphate-bearing mimetite (campylite) in a gangue of quartz, barite and manganese oxides were deposited in an east-west vein. Other minerals occur rarely, the most well-known being plumbogummite."
