Kaolinite after Orthoclase 'Pigs Egg' from Melbur China Clay Pit, Cornwall
Odd little specimens these. They are a pseudomorph of kaolinite and quartz after orthoclase feldspar, colloquially known by miners as a 'pigs egg'. No idea why, but I feel bad for the pig..
These specimens come from the Melbur China Clay Pit, Melbur, St Stephen-in-Brannel, Cornwall, England, UK. Unfortunately neither of the two I have are especially sharp, they are a little weathered but still an uncommon specimen.
A mineral pseudomorph is a mineral that replaces another, but maintains the shape of the original - imagine calcite filling the void left by a quartz point.
