Fish Coprolite fossils from Kemmerer, Wyoming, USA
Fish coprolites from the Green River Formation around Kemmerer, Wyoming.
Coprolites are fossilised poo, or dung - these are literally 3D fossils of fish poo. Great for fossil collectors or a daft gift for an odd friend.
They are on a very fine, thin shale, which has produced an area known as a Lagerstätte - an area of extremely good fossil preservation, even of soft tissues, plants, etc.
However, this does often mean these pieces can be quite fragile and it is possible for the coprolite to seperate from the matrix if not handled carefully.
These pieces are sold by the size of the matrix rock, not the size of the poo - the poos themselves are generally about half the size of the matrix rock in length.
Including this one, I have used the word 'poo' five times in this text. "You're a professional", they said. Ha.
